Are you more stylish because you love second hand?

Back when I was a kid, there was some not inconsiderable stigma attached to buying something at an op shop.

It was important that everything you bought was new and even better if it came with a famous label.

But a recent study has shown that people who shop in op shops or second hand are consistently more stylish than people who shop in conventional stores.

Op shopping has hit a new popularity these days. There are blogs, Facebook pages, Instagram accounts and tours devoted to the art. I have a shirt I paid $2.50 for that people comment on every single time I wear it and this week I nabbed a handbag worth $200 new for $15.

Have you taken up the habit? Whats your best buy?

I am "stylish" without buying from op shops....never bought any clothing from one and since I am not too interested in wearing the latest fashion, that does not interest me.

I like the classics and they are always stylish.

I agree that classics are always in style -- and are in fashion for decades -- but from what I have heard about these new types of op shops you can get some darn good stuff from them -- and if I saw something I liked I would not have a bother buying from them.

To each his own. Buying from an Op shop helps people who are a bit down and out and also the items don't go to landfill.

I've bought from op shops occasionally and have always been pleased with the items. I like the fact that they contribute to help those who need assistance and also do a little to reduce waste in our community. and of course they help to save money. Many years ago now, I bought a beautiful dress from an op shop that I wore and wore for ages. It just never seemed to wear out and I loved it! I often wondered why it's original owner gave it away. I have also occasionally bought household items and jewelry from op shops. Again, I've always been happy with the finds and have no problem with using pre-loved items. For anyone who makes their own handbags and needs bases or brass parts, handles etc, op shops can be an absolute mine of wonderful finds! My mind is working overtime now hahaha. What about some of those wonderful old fashioned cups with the fancy little handles for putting a miniature plant into? Or teapots for the same purpose? Or if you want to get really different, what about using a lovely old fashioned piece of pottery as a holder for a lovely bonsai tree? I could go on all day here but I won't! Did I hear a few mutters of 'thank heavens'? :)

I too love going into op-shops. I love those old teapots and have started planting succulents into them, they make lovely presents for friends. The people down the end of my street were putting household items out the front. I asked them if they were having a garage sale and could I buy a few pieces? The lady said I could help myself and didn't want any money. I got 2 beautiful soup tureens  in cream and have now planted a couple of large succulents in them. I'm always on the lookout for the unusual items.

I am superstitious about wearing other people's clothes....my reason for not buying from op shops. I am decluttering, so hunting for bargains at an op shop does not interest me.

I compensate by giving to various charities of my choice.
