Are the Commonwealth Games a little bit boring?
So the Commonwealth Games are over, and Australia is hosting them next. Six out of the last seven games have been hosted by Australia or the United Kingdom, with the last non-UK/Australia country to hold them being India in 2010.
Is it time for another country to step up?
I get there are a lot of pretty poor countries in the Commonwealth, but surely Malaysia, New Zealand or Canada could take it on? Brunei and Singapore are small but rich, maybe something could be worked out?
I mean, it’s a bunch of smaller countries and not many of them are strong in sport, so it’s in danger of losing relevance anyway. Will that outcome be accelerated by the fact that only two countries seem interested in hosting?
It won’t be a popular decision, but could richer countries help out with hosting duties for smaller countries.
We need a solution.
I enjoyed a lot of the televised coverage. I must say that while I was happy for those who achieved a medal I was also delighted for those who recorded a Personal Best even if they didn't get a medal. All we can ask of our athletes is to do their best when representing Australia and achieving a PB is just that.
BTW, just being a tad pedantic, 5 of the last 7 games have been hosted by UK/Australia, not 6. Malaysia hosted the games in 1998. If we go back a couple more, 1994 was Canada and 1990 New Zealand. There are 4 countries under the UK banner and each competes in its own right.
