Are the Commonwealth Games a little bit boring?

So the Commonwealth Games are over, and Australia is hosting them next. Six out of the last seven games have been hosted by Australia or the United Kingdom, with the last non-UK/Australia country to hold them being India in 2010.

Is it time for another country to step up?

I get there are a lot of pretty poor countries in the Commonwealth, but surely Malaysia, New Zealand or Canada could take it on? Brunei and Singapore are small but rich, maybe something could be worked out?

I mean, it’s a bunch of smaller countries and not many of them are strong in sport, so it’s in danger of losing relevance anyway. Will that outcome be accelerated by the fact that only two countries seem interested in hosting?

It won’t be a popular decision, but could richer countries help out with hosting duties for smaller countries.

We need a solution.

I enjoyed a lot of the televised coverage. I must say that while I was happy for those who achieved a medal I was also delighted for those who recorded a Personal Best even if they didn't get a medal. All we can ask of our athletes is to do their best when representing Australia and achieving a PB is just that.

BTW, just being a tad pedantic, 5 of the last 7 games have been hosted by UK/Australia, not 6. Malaysia hosted the games in 1998. If we go back a couple more, 1994 was Canada and 1990 New Zealand. There are 4 countries under the UK banner and each competes in its own right.

It is my view that way too much emphasis is placed on sport these days. There are numerous sporting events throughout the world where by participants can prepare for the Olympic Games, which I imagine is there major goal. If it's the best of the best, yeah sure, go ahead, however the Commonwealth Games, you've got to be joking. The glorification' of Great Britain ended many years ago, there is only ever two possible results Australia or England and I really don't think it matters. I feel it's time to wind them up, especially with all the ridiculous events they call sports, such as cricket etc. Take the Olympics Games for example, the only so-called sport they don't have in the Olympics these days is Pole Dancing and I'm sure that won't be far off, possibly more entertaining than some of the ridiculous events they have incorporated. I cant really imagine the Ancient Greeks performing synchronised swimming or BMX riding or one of the many other sports which I certainly don't considered should be classified as an Olympic Sport, such as Cricket, Tennis, Football, Basketball etc., the list is endless. Back to Basics Please, History and Tradition. Jacka.

Perhaps you should get off the couch...stop watching Home and Away for a while and investigate what "sport" means in these modern times.

I may disagree on the bulk of your post, Jacka, but I have to agree with synchronised swimming. Even worse than that was the ridiculous, and thankfully removed, individual synchronised swimming.

Any sporting event is relevant…I wish the Commonwealth Games a long and joyous life!

The full integration of the para games is a welcome evolution of both the Commonwealth Games and the olympics.

Couldn't agree more! Way better to have all the events integrated into one program, rather than relegating the Para section to a separate event the following week, when 90% of the crowds have gone home. I enjoyed the telecast, but have to admit that I did not stay up late for the late events. Well, not very many of them!

I enjoyed the Commonwealth Games. The achievements of all the athletes was a welcome change from all the dreary, sad, frightening and pessimistic news of the pandemic, Ukraine War and the tensions escalating in the Pacific for me.

Hey jacka, synchronised swimming was a thing long before the Olympics going back to Roman times, used to be done by the vestal virgins. They had to cancel it in modern times since no virgins can be found lol

Pole dancing is not new, started in the 12th century mate. The BMX  used to be called four horse chariot races. This wasn’t working, so a change was necessary

Lucca, loved the reply. I think you would be an ideal chap to have a beer with. Keep on keeping on. Cheers Jacka.
