Are Olympic Games a money pit or money well spent?

Brisbane will host the 2032 Olympics, with Australia to become only the third country to host the Games at least three times.

The bid predicted the Games would bring $17 billion in economic benefits to Australia.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the Games will be a time "for the whole nation to shine" while Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said earning the sporting spectacle was something the city and state aspired to, but never thought possible.

"We're a sports-loving state and this will give us, I believe our golden age, in Queensland, so we're very excited, we're over the moon and we're absolutely honoured."

Brisbane's selection was a fait accompli after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) anointed it as its preferred bidder earlier in the year, leaving nobody in any doubt there was only going to be one outcome.

Are you proud of Brisbane's selection? Does it show the little country can do big things better than most? Or do you think it's a waste of money? Are you watching the Tokyo Games?

Given the State of Qld economy and massive debt, I am bewildered to say the least, but hardly surprised at the Qld Govt.  They are economically inept and digging a bigger hole for the younger generation. This Premier has an ego you could not jump over.

So many other vital infrastructure is needed more than the Olympics, such as the Bradford Scheme to name just one.

Totally agree mogo51.. They also cunningly suckered Feds into paying 50% of the cost. It might be a short term sugar hit for South East Qld. but the rest of the state will again suffer as funds are diverted and projects postponed for the central and north of the state. Meanwhile the hospital system is a shambles, youth crime is out of control and now looks like even more millions will have to be poured into the Great Barrier Reef thanks to a UNESCO stitch up. As for the Bradford Scheme ... they would at best be dragged screaming and kicking to that one ..even if the greens and left factions allowed them to even consider it.

All power to the City...the rest can go and get....

Totally agree

Also, Palaszczuk needs to get her head out of the clouds and get to work doing something about the likes of Keswick island and the others that are being --and are already being taken over and ruined by the Chinese, but she never even answers her emails that is something she really needs to see to

Queensland health is leaving people sick category two waiting time should be 90 days but its at least 18 months, dental visits every 2 years if your lucky. 2 years wait between treatments for root canal. an education system equal to any third world country ( before Covid ) debt that will take forever to pay.  no government  housing  yet we always have the money to spend on sports.  and the politicians are the only ones with job security no matter how badly they stuff up.

Oh, how right you are tisme!

Sport seems to be the most important thing no matter what it makes me wonder what the hell they are thinking,  OR IF THEY EVEN DO

Spend the money on worthwhile  things

There is, in my opinion, a big problem with the Olympics in that it is getting larger and larger with ever more sports being included. In fact some would hard to describe as a sport.

The cost involved is huge without any real guarantee the city/country will see a return. Some businesses certainly make heaps but is any of that returned to the community who actually fund the infrastructure that is required to be built. Great statements are made about benefits to the community but is it driven more by the egos of those at the top of the tree?

I suspect Tokyo could turn out to be a real loser for the Japanese, largely because of Covid but who knows how long that will still be around

Waste of money IMO. I live in SE Queensland.

Considering they are talking about building new stadiums, sports arenas, etc. you wonder how much profit will come from the Olympics in the final tally. Certainly does not make anything better for most people. Just bragging rights for the Premier IMO.

There is no reason to believe that this is incorrect:

"Organisers are hopeful the Brisbane Games will be cost-neutral, meaning no additional expense for taxpayers beyond a $4.5 billion budget covered by ticket sales, sponsorship and the IOC.

"This is ultimately a win for every single Queenslander," Ms Palaszczuk, who forecast $17 billion of economic benefit, said.

"This is going to set Queensland up for a golden age.

"It's going to be a decade worth of investment. It is going to be a catalyst for change, opportunity ... this is our moment to shine."

How about this for an idea,  the Olympics as such originated in Greece whey don't all the countries put in money to build the required  infrastructure which would be far less than if they staged the games themselves.   All the buildings,  accommodation,  stadiums etc could be built in Greece without having to spend billions in other countries building all the same stuff.    All the stadiums would be there year after year with maintenance when needed.  We would not need all the Olympic hangers on around the world,  getting showered with gifts to try to secure their vote.  Countries would not have to spend millions just putting forward a bid.   All competitors must be amateurs no professionals allowed.    We could then maybe close all the  institutes of sport that we have in each state and federally.

Froggie, you're obviously on drugs or the only gullible person in the world who would believe a politician, especially Palaszczuk. One thing Brisbane doesn't need in any economic situation are the Olympic Games. See how Japan fares financially speaking. Olympic games should revert to the original style, without all the nonsense they incorporate today, simply to satisfy the idiots in the world. How they haven't got dwarf throwing and marbles in the Olympics is beyond me. Football, cricket, tennis, bmx, skateboard riding, what a load it codswallop, I don't believe the ancient Greeks ventured into these sports, perhaps their togas may have got caught in the spokes or prevented them passing the ball or making an overhead shot. (Yes I know they were naked in the original Olympics). I think we should run with Fred, all countries kick in a few bucks, build one SUPER COMPLEX for everything and everyone in Greece, where the Olympics originated and every four years everybody goes to Greece. Solves all the problems, no backhanders to the Olympic Board for allocating the next Games to the highest bidder, no jaunts for  Prime Minister's, Premier's and grubby overfed Lord Mayor's, yes it solves all the problems. Jacks.

Don't be rude, Jacka.

This - "Organisers are hopeful the Brisbane Games will be cost-neutral, meaning no additional expense for taxpayers beyond a $4.5 billion budget covered by ticket sales, sponsorship and the IOC" - would be from experts in this area.

Many of the things that will be built will have on-going benefits and the Games will bring tremendous publicity to Brisbane/Queensland/Australia.

I certainly don't believe everything politicians say. Morrison, for example, is a well-documented serial liar.

But I do believe the Olympics will be good for Australia to have, as were those in Sydney in 2000.

"...ticket sales..." Froggie??? You are assuming borders will not be shut!!!

There is too much power play going on for covid control to ever end!

Pachawi - we are talking 11 years. COVID-19 will be a bad memory.

Made a booking for my ticket to the opening ceremony in Queensland, well done Anna!!!!Yep would be nice if the games were held in Greece, but hey, just because someone invented something doesn't mean they should be left holding the baby ! Stop whining Jacka ad Palahawi :(((

Absolute criminal waste of money, Olympics always COST a fortune and NEVER make the country money at all.

Every country that has held them has lost a fortune It is a disgrace that they are spending this money when the country needs help after the money that has been paid out the last few years -- we are going to be in debt for the next 40/50 years.

The 2000 Olympics here cost us a fortune and we never made a dollar out of it after the amount we spent and the Olympic city was a waste of money after the event.

Yes Palaszczuk  got her bragging rights

Some of these politicians and faceless men who will no doubt be rewarded handsomely with under the table construction contracts should be made to spend some time in the Public Hospital System waiting for even routine treatment never mind anything that resembles "Specialist" treatment or spend a few days in a school up north or inland west of the coast that has no air conditioning in the hottest part of an Australian summer ... The goat track that is the Bruce Highway is a disgrace... but then pollies (of any party) rarely travel by car do they ... But then so many have now become "Ausmericans" whereas true aussies used to say "Need a hand Mate""?  now it's "I'm alright Jack F**K you" ... for so many now it has become more and more about the mighty dollar... One day people will wake up and realise "You can't eat money" ...

Hear Hear,  to you PainLodgic!!

Also, the fact that Susan Ley has just put the Barrier reef on hold and it is already mostly dead and it getting worse -- due to the hunger for MONEY --  Susan Key is a disgrace and cares NOTHING about ANYTHING to do with wild life   --- the whole lot of this disgusting, useless, corrupt government needs to start acting in honest ways and not the thoroughly corrupt and lying ways it has and still is doing and the pork-barreling it continues to do.

I am over the bloody lot of them!

The Unholy Trinity:  Sport, Media, Advertising. The great parasitic exploitation trio. All expenses paid

by the pedestrians of society through higher prices. I shall totally ignore the Olympics.

I am also with you Early,

As far as I am concerned the Olympics is the most boring of anything you could ever see all these selfish people that care only about themselves, didn't even care about the people of Japan PLEADING with them not to go, they are despicable!
