April Pension Rise - Single

Just wondering if you have got the letter from Centrelink. Got one today, which indicated that my single person pension would rise by about $7.70 per fortnight - for the CPI, from April 16th. That includes the Basic supplement. Guess they don't shop at the same supermarkets I do. My shopping bill has gone up and up, and I've bought less and less. Not to worry, I can still afford to lose another couple of kilo, but where do I go then?

hello bevg,

i'm sat here wondering how i will spend my $7 70,gosh what a lot of money it makes me wonder if the government can afford it,personally i think it's an insult by then again i suppose we have to be grateful for SMALL mercies'

by the way what will you be spending yours on ?

by the way what will you be spending yours on ?

-- Maybe driving to the shops to get the over priced food

IF you eat white bread :) 7 loaves at Aldi :)

Phyl.

No Aldi here at all :(

LOL, Phyl, with the amount of bread I eat, a loaf lasts me several weeks, no kidding! I have to keep it in the freezer now. But I find that not eating a lot of it means I can buy the good stuff - found a lovely loaf of soy and linseed at Coles, great with avocado or banana. I probably go through more tinned beans than bread, but beans are cheap.

I got given a whole bag of over-ripe tomatoes recently, so I cooked them up and made them into basic sauces, which I froze in small quantities - can use it for pasta, soups, stews, all sorts of things.

I eat very well indeed, in fact almost gourmet, but I have learnt to be very creative with my ingredients. Keeping a good basic larder of things like crushed garlic, crushed ginger(cheap generic brands), a range of spices, tins of beans, tuna etc - amazing what you can turn out. I make my own delicious dips from things like pumpkin, chickpeas, yoghurt etc, so I can have dip and crackers as a tv treat.

Good on you Jacinta. I buy a really big loaf of soy and linseed at (I better whisper this as I hear people are sick of hearing it ) Aldi $2.50 a loaf but my cute husband can only eat the white bread and we have grown heaps of tomatoes and we have juiced and boiled many and they are in the freezer in little containers also for spaghetti bolognese and sauces.

I like the three bean mix in cans just 89c a can at er Aldi.

People can eat well for reasonable cost. I must say food has risen in the last months though and $7.70 is not a big rise is it?

I think you have some exotic tastes (I really like chocolate and ice cream to be honest) but I just have the ice cream and choc. once now and again.

I like sweet chilli sauce on many things.

We never go a day without 10 x1/2 walnuts each and are seeing the good they do for us

Hope your Dad is doing o.k. and your sister making sure you get time off for yourself.

I'll be spending mine on more fruit and vegies - get mine at a local place and the prices are always cheaper and better quality than the supermarkets.

With spiralling prices and the governments miserly attitude to those on benefit payments, it wont be long before we are down to shoplifting instead of shopping.......even at Aldi!

OOaaa did you say that (I must not use your name here or I will be in big trouble) so kfchugo!

Have you no faith in our beloved Prime Minister Mr. Kevin Rudd?

Have faith man May is going to be exciting for all Seniors.

Trust me I am a car saleswoman lol

Have a wonderful Sunday.

WOW! What a great Pension rise. BUT I do think that the Pensionersin the Tropics should be paid more. Therre is no Aldi store, No Public transport to speak of. Everything cost more.

Sometimes the Internet is a curse.

You can see that other place are paying so much less for Fuel, Groceries, Etc.

A strange thing happened to me. When in WA, in Karratha , there was a Zone Allowance Paid in addtion to the Pension.

Go across countr y to Townsville, NO Zone Allowance.for Nh Qld.

Oh Well., with the Pension rise, i will be able to buy 1/2 litre of fuel extra.

But they wont sell me 1/2 bottle of Gas .

Woe is me.

HA! HA! Gotcha. Phyl

Bops Charlee on the head :)

But gently.

I agree $7.70 IS a pittance.

All Seniors will be excited in May...............Keep on keeping on until then and party time :)

Phyl, I admire your "glass half full" attitude and hope that you are right about an increase of significant proportion in May. My cynicism toward politicians however leaves me with a "glass pretty much empty" attitude.

At the risk of arousing the ire of the "thread police", how did the fried rice go.....?

I know I am much more aware of not going off topic now (nearly said your name again) bad me kfchugo. I do not want people to get any more upset about me because I dare to help with chatting about Aldi........

You are so very lucky kfchugo because you have a wife thinks you are wonderful and a great family...and you know how to cook great fried rice but I am coming a close second thanks to you.

We love it...... I never knew how before and I am a fairly good cook may I say :)

I looked in the Asian section of the supermarket today and saw many small bottles of exotic looking things and think I should become more inventive in my cooking to be honest.

I had meat to roast out of the freezer today but just put it back in the fridge and going to have something easy and light as it is very hot here today.

Nice weather though - May will be SO exciting :) btw I think folks get is it $150 extra this month?

wowee life is exciting. :) I was thinking you and your wife would come over for a barbeque when Charlee arrives kfchugo but I just dashed over the road and around the corner and see you are in NSW I was sure you were not too far from here.

Be good

Phyl.

its wonderful you all think and extra $7.70 towards food is a god sent, but what about the cost of electricity going up, fuel, etc. etc.

Me I think its and insult and I think that we will be lucky if pensioners get $30.00 in the May budget and lets not forget that during the boom time they did not rise the pension apart from the so called cost of living pittances.

Sorry but the Govt will go on paying themselves big wages and perks while sacking workers and screwing pensioners.

By the way chickywah I cant believe you are a pensioner if you think that a hand out of $500 twice a years ($19.00 a week) is better than $30 a week .

Have a nice day all but remember those that ask for a pittance get zilch.
