Anti-lockdown protesters want freedom. Really?

My 18 year old son is in his 11th day of quarantine. He is quarantining because he played basketball 10 days ago and someone on the opposing team was COVID positive. This poor kid is quarantining in his bedroom and has sole use of the family bathroom. We leave food at his door and wash our hands after clearing his dishes. He only leaves his room, masked to go to the bathroom and get tested. This is the requirement of DHHS. His six teammates are also quarantining, some in their bedrooms and some with their families. He is a social kid so he is doing it tough but he is doing this to protect his family and his community. I am disturbed and angered that thousands of people marched on the weekend for their freedom. Is it really freedom? Its certainly easy to package it up as freedom. Does this freedom mean that they dont need the governments assistance in the future? I wonder?

So many people think this is a conspiracy, not a pandemic. I dont think any government would willingly restrict their constituents to work or close businesses if they didnt need to. Taxpayers have been quite important in the past.

Dead right Rhonda. Freedom is earned through responsibility, and respect for others, and by

exercising self-discipline. These conspiracy theory nutters have brains like shrivelled walnuts.

I suspect their condition stems from a certain paranoia, perhaps arising from alienation in society,

which itself comes from the fact they are a bunch of losers.

Your poor son....through no fault of his own, he pays the price.

These morons who protest should be stripped of all their benefits. Why should we pay tax for these anals who want to endanger lives?

The army needs to be helping out. I've said it before and will continue saying it.

Sophie you have made the assumption that those who protested are on some Government benefit. That could so easily be wrong.

The fact these idiots behave in this way does not necessarily mean they are drawing on the public purse and is typical of LNP propaganda.

It is also a right wing attitude to bring the army in on matters of civil disobedience and that would be going down a very dangerous path that we see in totalitarian States and we don't want to see that in this Country.

Oops...I forgot, the army is already here...

Agreed Rhonda. It makes me so angry that these selfish people will likely get away with it, too. They should be charged with reckless endangerment or such ... Some people ...

I am not against people's right to protest or hold different opinions to my own. It's sort of stating the obvious but if the anti-vax, anti-lockdown, anti-covid, anti-deep state, anti-surveillance, conspiracy theorists and other anti-social protestors don't protest now, when should they protest? Surely it is relevant now.

I would rather encourage protestors meet at the showgrounds and protest to their heart's delight. They could then remain quarantined at the showgrounds for 14 days without putting other members of the community at risk. People caught protesting elsewhere should be fined and join them for 28 days.

Think about this then!!

Inside the ramshackle three-bedroom Sydney home where infected family watched their grandmother, 85, die from Covid - after 'unplanned wake' for a 27-year-old man's suicide turned into a massive superspreader eventPendle Hill Coronavirus Australia tragedy: Superspreader wake for suicide death 'wasn't a

About 50 people descended on the Pendle Hill property (main) on July 19 to mourn a 27-year-old man who had died by suicide earlier this week, despite public health orders banning large gatherings and concerns about household-to-household transmission. However, the family's attempt to reach out to one another at a terrible time sparked a superspreader event at the home, with some 28 attendees testing positive to Covid-19 in the eight days since. A grandmother, 85, died at the home on Monday afternoon after testing positive to the virus, authorities confirmed (a Hazmat officer is top left). When Daily Mail Australia asked how the wake had come together, a close relative appeared to suggest the wake wasn't planned. 'It wasn't a gathering, no. We are a big family, that's all.'

If some people get Covid  and die as a result of those protests, it could be considered a form of manslaughter!

no more likely to be manslaughter than the removalists who came to Melbourne or the returning family that breached quarantine to go to the shops or in NSW the families attending the funeral and so on.

But don't you think that the world the last decade especially the last two years is full of self centred humans?   More and More I hear this, what people want want want, no thought for the rest of the community.

This applies more and more for those over 55yrs of age we feel.

Life and the world has totally changed and not for the better.

I don't think under 55s are on their lonesome when it comes to wanting for themselves without thought for the rest of the community.

I reckon that the moron who punched the Police Horse should as a punishment be made to stand behind the same horse whilst he received a swift kick from the hind legs,  if this happened there would be no way he would eve think of punching another horse.   I did like the way a lot of people were showing sympathy to the Cop who had ink thrown over him by some brain dead idiot by shaking his hand and patting him on the back.    It just goes to show that although there were a lot of protesters there it was as is the norm just a few there who stir up the crowd.   Coppers it does not matter what they believe in,  if they agree with the protesters or if they disagree they are the ones to Cop the abuse and physical violence.   By this sentence you will guess what I used to do I have had plastic bags full of urine and or crap thrown at me,  I have seen protesters throw ball bearings under the hooves of Police horses,  I have been spat on,  uniform ripped belted in the face and all because some idiots disagreed with what ever decision a government  makes or because there are meetings of head of world governments about trying to do things for different countries.   Cops are there to protect both sides they are to coin a phrase the Piggy in the Middle.   By the way I never got up set by being called a PIG because I have a little Gold badge that is inscribed  with a little Pig and the words Pride, Integrity and Guts

Onya Fred. Thank you for your service.

A moron for sure Fred; perhaps it is time for more drastic measures to disperse these stupid morons spreading the virus; e.g. Water cannons with maybe a yellow dye in the water.

They should make the most of it while they can...if ( or when) China extends its influence over countries like ours..these "protesters" will be at best locked up. Maybe they should protest about that as this is the greatest threat to these fools.

I have a great idea, I always thought there should be a practice range where suicide bombers could go away from the general public and practice their suicide bombing, the same could be made available for the suicide antivax, anti lock down and "Entitled Generation" proponents.

A secure property outside all cities where these suicide anti vaxers etc can practice their trade and be locked in for a month, if any one survives then we will see how many want to join the sect of antivax and anti lock down and human rights "Entitled Generation".

They are no more than potential murders.

Wake up government get tougher, the media should be banned from publishing this crap, freedom of speech proponents will undoubtedly will poo poo my ideas, too bad what they think, the same for Palmer the great who is trying to be a big hero for Australia.

I am saving all my junk mail for a couple of weeks, make a big package out of it and post it back to Palmer without a stamp so he will have to pay the postage. It has worked in the past with unwanted rubbish in the mail. try it.

I feel for the family and son. Illness in any young person is a tragedy particularly through no fault of their own. I wish them well in this trying time and pray for the young man's recovery.

I know I am going to get slammed for the following, but when is the time to stand up for democracy and the rights it is supposed to confer?

Before you slam me as selfish, I abide by lockdown, quarantine, and other rules, but I live in a small rural community and see the damage it has done to business. I have friends who have lost everything, friends who have lost jobs.

Before you slam me as an antivaxxer, I am not. I do have concerns, however. When the companies require indemnity against injury and in their own words require the buyer to accept that the long term efficacy and side effects are unknown as the drug is still being tested, and when through reading scientific papers through my work which outline the process for testing a new drug which hasn't been followed, my concerns are legitimate. Many people have these concerns. Further, I am allergic to a number of vaccines so I have other concerns.

And now there is talk of restrictions of freedom of movement and access for the unvaccinated. Travel passports, no admittance to hospitality venues, sporting facilities. Are we to become an apartheid society, divided by vaccination?

when is the time to stand against the erosion of democracy? Or will it come to

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Martin Niemoller 1946

How is there an erosion of democracy? The governments making the vaccine, lock-down, mask etc decisions have been democratically elected.

Democracy does not mean going against laws, rules, regulations etc which have been legally implemented just because you don't agree.

LorLes,

This illegal gathering which can only spread the virus faster  is not a democratic thing to do, democracy is about majority community consensus. I sure as hell did not vote for this odd assortment of groups to take the action they did  with too much violence. The "protesters" are actually a bunch of selfish people more concerned about their concept of "me"  than their communities.  Invoking Martin Niemoller does not fit here, it fits more to things like casualisation of the workforce, depressing wages  and corruption/rorting at some government levels.

I read an interesting article about smallpox vaccination today, the 1930's cartoon that accompanied was telling, there are a group of people hand in hand walking off a cliff, the cliff is titled misinformation, the black abyss below the cliff is labelled smallpox. the leader is blindfolded with the word prejudice written on the blindfold, his vest reads anti-vaccination, the second fellow with dark glasses is labelled faddist, the third is titled Mr Careless and the 4th is titled anti-everything.  The accompanying text states that a vaccine was available in the late 1700's1786 approximately.

A William Tebb from the UK went to USA and started the American Anti-Vaccination Association in the late 1800's, millions died of smallpox until it was eradicated in the 1980's.

Based on these facts it is not drawing too long a bow to say that anti vaxxers have unnecessarily caused millions of deaths between late 1800's and 1980's.

We do not need gatherings like last weekend to cause more deaths.

Lorles,

Actually since the 1786 vaccine evolved and cured more and more people as time went by, the only point that you might consider that I make admirably is that you are an Anti-Vaxxer  hiding behind "democracy"

Right on Froggie.

Democracy is about participation in the decision making, not just leaving it to a few to *decide*. It seems many do not recognise their democratic right to have input and exercise that right. I exercise that right regularly in responding to various public submissions. Mandating takes away the right to have input.

Over the years, I have seen many rights and freedoms eroded by the stroke of a pen in a piece of legislation. We are too willing to give up rights and freedoms in the name of safety and security.

As Benjamin Franklin said: Those would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

We take democracy for granted as we do not have to fight for it. I had the privilege of hearing Rala Gusmao - first president of Timor Leste - speak. He said he understood the power of democracy and its inherent value as he had fought for it and seen people did for it. If we are not prepared to at least participate in or when it comes to it, fight for it, we do not deserve it.

Further, Refusing citizens the right of freedom of movement and access is a breach of the Human Rights Charter. Freedom of movement between the states is also written into the constitution of Australia.

As stated, I abide by the rules on lockdown, etc., but I will not stand idly by and watch the Australia I love and its democracy be taken from us in the name of temporary safety.

I'm with you Lorles you have a democratic right to die from covid 19.

Lorles, can you point to where freedom of movement between the states is written into the Constitution of Australia? There is a discussion of this right here however it does not mention anything beyond the convenant.

Here is the cartoon referred to in my previous post.

As you mention smallpox, my understanding is that the original vaccine killed numerous people in its first iteration, so you make my point admirably.

You won't talk so loud when you're wearing a respirator, LorLes.

I am trying to have a civilised discussion about democracy and our responsibility to participate in the decision-making process and uphold the principles of it. There is no need for these hostile, derogatory remarks.

I am not, as I have said, an anti-vaxer nor a fadist, but am in fact well-read in the scientific fields due to my work. I do believe people who have COVID and do not quarantine need to receive the maximum penalty as that is selfish. As I said, I have abided by all the requirements, but the attitude I am receiving only supports my point that we are becoming a divided society with the vaccinated blaming the unvaccinated. Is that really what you want for the future?
