I think this, a comment a person has put up says it all.

[I am a former Staffy breeder. I know everything there is to know about the breed. I bred champion stock. They are the most wonderful, possessive and loving dogs -until they get into a frenzy when their eyes glaze with adrenalin and they go into attack mood. They see no reason, can turn on each other when in a pack, can rip a bull mastiff to pieces and will not respond to commands. Anything can turn them - mine destroyed 4 dogs, 6 cats and even turned on each other when in a dog fight with a bull mastiff that they 'shredded. We do not need dogs like this in Australia. Yes, other dogs can also turn on you but the do not have the jaw or bite to crush bones.]

An Alfa dog, which we have had for 11 years, needs to be control and taught in a different way to other dogs;   it was more concerned I think that it wanted to keep it own space in its pecking order.    These dogs big or little Alfa, need to feel they are comfortable in their pecking order, once they start seeing a weak person in their territory they will go for the higher pecking order.

The senior grandmother was not that person to control a child and an alfa dog.

PS:   It is the same with a stallion, wolf or any animal that is an alfa.
