At least 330 cats have died in the UK, according to Royal Veterinary College figures - but the true number is likely to much higher. Lawyers representing owners claim thousands of cherished pets have become sick and vets believe many cases could also have gone undocumented. They both had AVA anti-hairball cat food but Sterling always ate first while Shadow was often sick after eating which may have saved his life.

Beware!

The warning has gone out for British made, I don't know about Australian manufactured or if it is made here or Asia.

There is a real problem with regulations about pet food, best to just get a few scraps from the butchers, especially for dogs, years ago I made my own pet food for both my cat and dog, they never got sick.

We used to for the dogs except the dry food, but they preferred our wet food, but not for the cats now.

What do you use for wet food for the cats?   Ours will only eat certain foods!  I have tried all types and raw food too.

I don't currently have pets, was years ago, when I made the dog mix, the cat would eat it too! Was basically scraps containing offal and I cooked it up in a big pot and added veggies and I think oats. Just type in "homemade recipes for cats" into google and you will find heaps of good recipes, some with chicken, some with fish. Maybe you could make small portions to test them out first.

I heard that the food was poison because the HORSES had eaten some sort of poison grass --  I am afraid I don't believe them -- I am with Ingognito buy same as you would eat for your beloved pets

This is not the 1st time this store-bought pet food was proved dangerous

From a pelican playing with a bottle to a stag with a plastic bag wrapped around its mouth: Shocking images reveal the distressing effects of litter on wildlife in London parks this year

Shocking images reveal the distressing effects of litter on wildlife in London parks this

Pizza boxes, glass bottles, dog waste bags and PPE have all been proving hazardous to animals and birds during the various coronavirus lockdowns and beyond. In the last year 1,982 tonnes of waste - the equivalent weight of 157 new London Routemaster buses - was collected from parks and green spaces across the capital, according to the Royal Parks charity which manages them. Small animals and birds can climb inside plastic bags or get their heads stuck in bottles or cans and suffocate, experts warn, while wildlife attracted to left-over picnic scraps can accidentally eat plastic waste, clogging up their intestines and causing them pain or even death by starvation.

So sad, this whole thing has been devastating to the wildlife, an environmental disaster! Meanwhile the companies that make the product have no accountability, should be made to put some of their profit into cleaning up the mess IMO.

Wally Walrus's world tour continues! Marauding mammal looks like he fancies hopping on board a boat as he pops up in Ireland after visiting UK and Europe Walrus fancies hopping on board a boat as he pops up in Ireland after visiting UK and

Wally the Walrus was photographed attempting to hop on to a boat (left, top right, bottom right) owned by a local hotelier off the coast of Ardmore, Co Waterford, on Wednesday. Patrick Shields, general manager at the five-star Cliff House Hotel in Ardmore, joked that staff were surprised to see international guests arriving in the summer of a pandemic. The lonely walrus is believed to be from Svalbard, north of Norway, and has been on a 4,000km solo trip for months. Wally was first spotted in Ireland off the coast of Valentia Island in March, and has since travelled along the coast of western Europe, being spotted in France, Spain and the UK. Most recently he has been sighted in the Isles of Scilly, off Cornwall in England, with experts claiming he may be heading back to the Arctic after his European venture.

Poor thing, probably looking for company.

You feline lucky punk? Moment fearless cat Vasya sees off a wild bear after it wanders into her owner's camp

Vasya the hero cat was filmed by angler Sergey Tarasov in the camp beside the Angara River near Ust-Ilimsk in the Irkutsk region of Siberia facing down the wild brown bear. Despite the bear rearing up onto its hind legs, Vasya hissed at the larger predator, arching his back which prompted the bear to retreat back into the woods.

The fishermen filmed Vasya who refused to back down even though the bear got onto its hind legs in a threatening gesture

5 Signs Your Cat Has Diabetes

5 Signs Your Cat Has DiabetesDiabetes mellitus is a chronic, and potentially debilitating, condition in cats. The disorder is most prevalent among obese cats, male cats over eight years old, and those on a diet high in carbohydrates.

Cases of feline diabetes are on the rise, and given the severity of the condition, it is important to take early measures to prevent or manage the health of your diabetic cat.

Typically, diabetes mellitus is a disorder that results when the cells develop a resistance to insulin, a hormone that aids the entry of glucose into the cells. This causes a build-up of the glucose levels in the bloodstream.

Diabetic cats mostly suffer from Type II diabetes, where the body cells can no longer adequately respond to insulin, leading to elevated levels of glucose.

A complete diagnosis always requires a visit to the vet, but a closer look at your cat at home can tell you if there’s a problem. Bring your cat to Dr. Minta Keyes for a check-up if you notice any of these signs:

EARLY SIGNS OF DIABETES IN CATS

1. Excessive Urination & Thirst
Your cat may be suffering from Type I or Type II diabetes if they are urinating frequently. The kidneys attempt to remove the excess glucose from the body through urine. The high concentration of glucose pulls excessive amounts of water into the urine. Increased urination can mean high body water losses, possible dehydration, and increased thirst.

2. Increased Weight Loss & Appetite
When a cat has diabetes, cells can no longer absorb the glucose from the blood appropriately. As a result, starved cells will trigger the breakdown of the fats and proteins available in the body as an alternative source of energy.

The cat may lose weight in a failed attempt to fill the void left after burning fats and proteins, and as a result, their appetite increases.

LATER SIGNS OF DIABETES IN CATS

If a cat displays a combination of the following symptoms, they could be in critical condition and require intensive care. Later signs of diabetes include the following:

3. Inability to Jump & Loss of Interest
While the loss of interest may be a subtle sign, you can tell your cat is sick if you keep proper track of your cat’s activity. If your cat can no longer jump on furniture they used to be able to, they may be sick.

4. Change in Gait
Diabetes in cats can lead to weakness, which makes them walk flat on the back of the hind legs. Following the elevated blood sugar level, neuropathy affects the nerves in the hind legs, and the condition may result in permanent paralysis if left untreated for long.

5. Lack of Appetite, Vomiting, Lethargy
The health of your cat is in jeopardy if you notice these late symptoms of diabetes mellitus. Hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, and gastroparesis can cause nausea in cats leading to vomiting, lost appetite, and lethargy.

THE BOTTOM LINE ON FELINE DIABETES

If you suspect your cat is sick, visit your veterinarian as soon as possible. Excessive urination, thirst, heightened appetite, vomiting, lethargy, and inactivity are symptoms of diabetes mellitus. At The Cat Hospital of Tucson, we’re committed to helping pet parents care for their cats throughout their lives. Call us to book an appointment for a check-up and diagnosis of your cat.

Aww so tiny the little ones are against their big parents.

Hi Incognito!   I have to admit I cannot remember seeing twins as in Elephant families.

Seems like twins are indeed rare Celia.

Twin births are rare among elephants. In wild African elephant populations, the frequency of twin births was observed to be 0.07% at Amboseli and 2.46% in Tarangire National Park. At Tarangire National Park 7 sets of twins were born in 284 pregnancies.

Williams Espinoza of the Rancagua police said the woman's ordeal was brief. 'She did not realize that the door of the animal's cage was open and was immediately attacked by this tiger, causing her death on the spot,' he said.

The safari park was closed while police investigated. Jorge Mena, from the regional public prosecutor's office, said they would be investigating possible third-party culpability for what happened.

The Rancagua Safari Park did not respond to a request for comment.

The condition of the tiger was not known.

Police said the woman was unaware the door of the tiger's cage was left open and she died instantly

Poor young woman.

The young woman working at a safari park in Chile has died after a tiger attacked her, police said. She was among staff cleaning and carrying out maintenance work on Friday in the big cats’ enclosure of a safari park in the city of Rancagua, 90km south of the capital Santiago.

Celia your photo shows a lion, so bit confusing.

Always a risk to be cleaning out the enclosure, why were they not locked up while cleaning was in place? Very strange it can happen.

Yes I know it shows a lion it is a photo of the safari park!  I have no control of what the safari park is showing.
