Line-up of owls is among the frames in the running for Wildlife Photographer of the Year

A line-up of photogenic burrowing owls, (top) friendly civets, a hare turned into a sphere,(bottom) two sleeping squirrels,(bottom left) a weird looking Japanese warbonnet (bottom right) and playful Iberian lynx. These are only some of the subjects that feature in the list for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year's 'people's choice' category, a competition held by the Natural History Museum and the winner will be revealed on 9 February 2021.

Male lions frequently leave the pride after losing out in a fight to a challenger and it is likely the lion in these photos suffered that fate. Surviving losers often become nomads, and have to fend for themselves so lose weight, and scavenge more than they hunt as they grow older.r/natureismetal - Male lions frequently leave the pride after losing out in a fight to a challenger and it is likely the lion in these photos suffered that fate. Sad end for the old males.

Life is hard for the lions, especially when others want to come in and kill the cubs.

In the dog house! Owners share snaps of their pets looking guilty after being caught misbehaving - including a naughty pair who chewed through a DOOR

Exasperated owners share photos of their adorable pets pulling 'guilty faces'

Owners from around the world took to social media to share photographs of their animals pulling very cute expressions after being caught misbehaving. The innocent puppy eyes captured in most of the images no doubt resulted in the owners forgiving their badly behaved pets. Pictured clockwise from top left: two pets ripped apart a sofa; two dogs chewed through a door; a puppy couldn't resist a roll of toilet paper; a hungry pup took a bite out of a loaf; making a mess in the bathroom; a dog who didn't know when to stop.
