Ambulance cover for pensioners

Just be aware that maybe even though you are on the pension and covered by Ambulance in your OWN stae--you MAY NOT be covered when visiting another state--I found out about this--after making many enquiries--not even the Medicare was aware--nor the different Ambulance offices--I have to write to the Queensland Premier--and it took him quite some time to get back to me--I will post the letter I got from him when I scan it.. It was some time ago and I doulbt it has changed.

There was a case of a woman that had to have Air Ambulance and she was up for $8000---

Gee that s a lot of money and it would have been cheaper by far for her to have taken a Commercial flight ............Travel Insurance is a better way considering that she was so far away from home

Dear Ms +++++++++++++++++

I refer to your email of 6 May 2004, addressed to the Honourable P Beattie MP,

Premier and Minister for Trade in relation to the Community Ambulance Cover levy. The matters you have raised fall within the portfolio responsibilities of the

Honourable T Mackenroth MP, Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for Sport, and your correspondence has been forwarded to this Office for consideration and direct reply. As Parliamentary Secretary to Mr Mackenroth, I have been asked to respond on his behalf.

Since the introduction of the Community Ambulance Cover levy on 1 July 2003, all Queensland residents are covered for emergency ambulance transport both in Queensland and across Australia. However, the Community Ambulance Cover levy does not provide ambulance coverage for residents of other States or overseas visitors. Interstate and overseas visitors requiring ambulance services whilst in Queensland will be charged for those services. As an interstate visitor, you should contact your own State ambulance service or your health fund to enquire about options for coverage in Queensland.

I trust this information is of assistance.

Yours sincerely

Anything people can learn to make sure we are covered is a good thing Jane. Thank you

Phyl.

Yes and if you are not covered you can take out 6 months insurance to cover you while you are away--or 12 months--6 months costs about $10 or $11 well worht it--thats what I did just to make sure

I checked with my private health fund and they would cover any ambulance expenses not incurred in my home state.

Yes thats what I am saying PRIVATE health cover for Ambulance WILL cover you in all states but the Ambulance cover that you get with the pension may NOT--thats why it is wise to check--and take pout private cover--even if it is JUST Ambulance cover

From the Centrelink site:

Please note: Ambulance cover will vary from state to state. Cardholders are recommended to contact the ambulance service in their state/territory to discuss what cover their card provides. If travelling interstate, cardholders should also contact the service in the areas they are travelling to, or through.
