ABC to delay mandatory iView login

The ABC, which was planning to introduce a mandatory login for its online iView service this month, has instead delayed the move for at least six months.

In a statement, the ABC said: “We had initially intended to roll out mandatory log-ins across July and August but have decided to slow things down to ensure our audiences understand the benefits they will receive from creating an ABC account and the ways we manage and protect their personal information.

“We are continuing to work with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner to ensure we are industry leaders in terms of the use of personal data, in line with the trust that Australians place in the ABC. It is our intention to introduce mandatory logins for ABC iView by the end of the year.

“The response from Australians has been overwhelmingly positive. We have seen more than 1 million (1,014,983) new ABC accounts created from 29 March to 29 June, inclusive. Over that same period, we have received 180 complaints – ie. complaints represented 0.017 per cent of total sign-ups.”

Yes - I have absolutely now problems with it.

I have a question - WHY???  I find it annoying to have to log in to various TV program catch ups. Who is "overwhelmingly positive" according to the ABC? Certainly not me.

The other pesky annoyance is previously free to air programs being diverted to pay networks, e.g. Series 8 of Father Brown. After seven seasons, as pensioners, we now have to forego or cough up. Not amused!

Why would anyone bother to complain to an organisation who only listens to people supporting its own disingenuous, myopic view of the world?

I agree with you BillW41. Why on earth would they need to do this, except somewhere down the line they intend to charge us for this service. I managed to set up an account on my laptop, but have had no success transferring it to the 'Iview' on my smart TV. Actually it doesn't really concern me, as I hardly ever go to Iview. Some of the historical programs on SBS are much better.

Yes I have tried to register BUT I do not like the terms and conditions so I gave up and will not bother

Login? Why? They're not Fake Book. Another reason why the ABC should be privatised!
