A very smelly issue

One of the disturbing side-effects of COVID for some was the loss of taste and smell. Those two senses give me huge pleasure, but a keen sense of smell can also be a problem.

Who remembers sitting in the back seat of a car while the parents in the front smoked cigarette after cigarette – often with the windows up? Or great aunt Lottie was sitting next to you reeking of perfume?

Should perfumes even be sold now? Should they be allowed in confined spaces, such as an aircraft? Do you consider what perfumed products you use and when? Has that changed over the years?

To me, "perfume is poison." I have become highly sensitised to many aromas people wear, from perfumes to body potions, moisturisers etc. Sometimes I'm in a room - theatre, or funeral -  but have to move away from a person because of their aroma. Not BO, just ordinary perfumes. I know I've caused offence but I can't help it. Otherwise I feel ill.

Stuck in a lift with a lady once, nearly ill when I got out 3 floors later. Perfume was horrendous.

I think some elderly (but not all) ladies get a cheap bottle of pong (cheap and nasty stuff) for their birthday or whenever, I don't know how much they put on but they stink to high heaven, especially in confined spaces like buses, the whole bus stinks even long after the offender gets off, even walking past one is nauseating.  Ladies please throw this stuff away, saves you being treated as a brainless leper and being embarrassed because I will tell you!

Goodness me, are we turning into a mob of wowsers?  A well chosen perfume adds allure to a person (be it a woman wearing perfume or a man with aftershave or cologne).

A well made and chosen perfume enhances the natural pheromones of the body and stirs the interest of a possible mate.  (I guess though that if a person is beyond a healthy libido, they would not notice it.)

If a person is wearing a scent to mask poor hygiene than the combination could be unpleasant and best to stay upwind of them.  If there's one odour that I find unpleasant it is the smokers after scent as it permeats the clothes of those near them and there have been times when my first move when getting home was to shed those clothes into the washing machine and getting under the shower.

I'm with you Couldabeen.  If a fragrance is chosen well it's a delight to be near that person, but I fear a lot of people buy before they try.
