A favourite biscuit has disappeared

Some things are sacred – like a favourite biscuit. There have been heaps of disappearing products throughout the pandemic, though most return. But where are the Ryvitas?

Fans queried their disappearance and sought enlightenment on Facebook. One wrote "Ryvita, stop posting ads for a product that is no longer available in major Australian supermarkets. Has Ryvita been withdrawn from the Australian market?"

Ryvita was spurred into action with a spokesperson confirming that increased production and distribution costs had meant increased prices.

"Woolworths and Coles have declined to accept this increase and have made the decision to remove the sale of these products from their stores," the spokesperson said.

Sad but true. The company says you can still find Ryvita products at most IGA stores.

Have you noticed any other products disappearing from supermarket shelves? Is it fair that supermarkets refuse to stock items because the manufacturewr has had to increase the price? Shouldn't that choice be left up to the consumer?

Typical BIG business. "If we can't make a good profit on the item why sell it and bugger the customers".

Hundreds of products have vanished off the shelves over the last 50 odd years and longer, that I can remember.  Where was all the weeping and wailing then?  The more sensible among us have just learned that it is the way of the world, nothing lasts forever, and tastes change.  Products change or stop being manufactured for many reasons, cost of production is only one of them.

Be that as it may, I will admit that I'm still mad about the loss of Herbert Adams Rainbow Cake, and that vanished more years ago than I care to remember.  It was my favourite cake since I was about 5 or 6 years old and I am now 72!  I remember it being delivered fresh to milk bars etc, in big slabs.  No pre-packed plastic rubbish back then.

Never liked Ryvita, so won't miss them!

The consumer allowed Woolworths and Coles to become the "giants" they are today. Supporting the smaller businesses would keep the big ones honest.
I hate shopping Woolworths and Coles but there are no other options easily available damn it!

Agree johninmelb ... and hundreds more new products have appeared. So many innovative choices in the biscuit section these days. Ryvita tasted like cardboard to me, won't miss it.

Now if they removed Saos ... that would be a totally different story for me. Addicted to them LOL.

From their Facebook page: We know that it’s been hard to find your favourite Ryvita. However, we’re still available at independent retailers under the IGA banner. Help your fellow Ryvita lover out and comment below where you find us

It's not so much the products that have gone the way of the dinosaur but more the products that have become smaller and smaller. For starters, a Weetbix value pack now just offers 1.2kg of the cereal, when it used to have 1.5kg, and a bag of Smiths chips now contains 170g instead of 200g. Then we have a standard tube of Pringles that used to contain 165g of the chips, but now holds just 134g, and there's been even more shrinkage to blocks of Cadbury chocolate. A standard block was once 250g, before being reduced to 200g and then 180g. I wonder if the big two supermarkets have caused the shrinkage or if it's the companies that are at fault. Either way, it's us, the consumer, who are losing out.

Sue I think that

'Shrinkflation'

of these goods are caused by companies that are producing them

The latest one I notice is Cadburys chocolate blocks.

Seems like it's the manufacturers from this article ...

Thanks Suze and RnR, I take your point but the Ryvita story has their product not being stocked because of a price rise and the question has to be asked if the big two also refused to allow a price rise for those products that have shrunk? It's the old chicken and the egg question.

Sue, I'm waiting for the day when a dozen eggs becomes 10!

I love Ryvita and have enjoyed them since childhood over 60 years ago. Fortunately I live near an Aldi store and a large IGA store -  both stock Ryvita.

Shame about Ryvita...I like it with avocado and cottage cheese. I won't go hunting around for it though, but I've heard from my neighbour our local IGA still sells it.

Now chips are another matter. I don't shop at Aldi usually but someone on this forum mentioned their chocolate, so when I was passing by, I dropped in and  discovered they sell chips that are even better than Smiths and the bag is much fuller! The chocolate is lovely too.
